The Telemedicine Laboratory of Tampere University of Technology
carries out research of medical information technology and telemedicine.
Concrete objectives are e.g. the improvement of data transfer
in hospitals, the development of electric patient data systems
and the digitalisation of medical information.
Equipment and software manufacturers in the fields of computer
technology and healthcare are cooperating with the Telemedicine
Laboratory in this work.
The Telemedicine Laboratory is located in the MediWest Technology
Center in Seinäjoki because the region offers a well developed
technical infrastructure for the application of telemedical
solutions. The involvement of regional bodies, health-care institutions
as well as local companies form an ideal environment for the
development of new e-health applications.
The Telemedicine Laboratory is headed by
professor Kari Mäkelä, who is the first professor of medical
information technology and telemedicine in Finland. The Laboratory
was inaugurated in 1.1.2003.
